Long live the hops! What is behind your favorite beer

The wonderful world of hops: more than just a flower

Did you know that hops is a crucial ingredient in the elaboration of beer? Every year, about 100,000 tons of this botanical jewel are cultivated in several regions of the globe. Of these, more than 30,000 tons come from Hallertau, a historic German area that has a stellar reputation thanks to its ideal climate.

A perfect climate: why Hallertau is the king of hops

The Hallertau region is between Munich and Nuremberg and has climatic conditions that seem to measure for hops growth. With more than 19,000 hectares of crops, the degree of moisture, the warm temperature and the depth of their soils provide a perfect framework for the development of this climbing plant, belonging to the Cannabináceas family.

The hours of love in the cultivation of hops

A popular German says: “The hops floor wants to see its owner every day.” And it is not for less; Hop culture requires about 200 hours of work per hectare, 40 times more than a cereal culture! From the construction of structures every year for plants to grow, to the meticulous work of guiding them while climbing, dedication is immense.

The hops: cultivating it is a science (and an art)

In addition to physical work, constant supervision is vital to avoid pests and ensure culture health. This includes from strategic pruning to adequate fertilization. The good news is that, although the plant does not begin to produce up to three years of sowing, once in full performance, it can live between 12 and 15 years, as long as it is treated with due love.

The aromatic heart of beer

Hop flowers are the key to the game. They contain alpha-acids, which are responsible for the characteristic bitterness of beer, as well as essential oils that provide complex aromas. These compounds not only define the profile of beer, but are so delicate that they require careful handling during harvest.

A party to celebrate hops

Each harvest season, Hallertau’s communities celebrate with fervor. These festivities are a tribute to the collection of hops and mark the beginning of a cycle that will fill the beers of the coming months, guaranteeing that the freshness of the hops remains intact.

Prices, generations and the history of hops

While we talk about hops, it is important to mention the impact of the market. As demand has grown, prices have also risen dramatically, with an increase of more than 50% in some varieties. But we cannot forget that the rich agricultural heritage of this region has cemented its place in the heart of beer lovers worldwide.

A flavor chameleon

The German hops is not only varied, but its versatility has led to many crosses between species to enhance properties such as aroma and bitterness. This has been especially useful for facing diseases that can threaten crops.

In bulk: transforming flavors into beers

Today, brewers have a wide range to choose from. From noble hops such as the Hallertauer, to more modern options such as the Hersbrucker, each of them offers a unique proposal that enriches the variety of beers available in the market, making each sip a different delight.

After all, the hops is not only a plant; It is a passion, an art and a tradition that lasts over time. By enjoying a good beer, remember the effort and dedication behind each drop.
