Backus: The liquid story that made history in Peru

by David Martín Rius

A tour that started with ice and a lot of flavor

Imagine two young visionaries in the nineteenth century, perhaps wanting to conquer not only the cold of Lima, but also the minimum opportunities in a country in full construction: thus born what we know today as the Peruvian beer giant. From his humble start as ice factories and why not say it, with liquid expansion dreams, Backus grew to became the power we all enjoy now.

The national impulse that transformed the beer industry

The history of Backus is not only business, but also of economic patriotism. In the 1950s, a group of Peruvian businessmen took the reins and turned the company into an example of local management, moving the headquarters from London to Lima and betting on national production with a vision that still endures. The territorial expansion and diversification raised the profile of the brand, consolidating the presence in every corner of the country.

Merging efforts in the modern era

The change of the century brought key alliances. The acquisition of other producers and the entry into new markets allowed Backus not only to survive, but also to prosper. The fusion with the Colombian giant Bavaria, in 2002, marked a before and after, in the consolidation strategy that ended up positioning one of the most beloved brands in Peru in a global scenario, always with an eye on its roots.

Innovations and variety: more than a beer, an experience

What would be backus without its option portfolio? From the classic glass, company icon, to the exclusive Cusco, which pays tribute to Inca cultural wealth, each product plays a role in our tables. We also find regional beers such as Pilsen Callao, Arequipeña and San Juan. But not everything revolves around beer: non -alcoholic beverages, specialized water and imported brands complete a catalog that reflects innovation with flavor to tradition.

Looking to the future, with a taste of history

Today more than ever, Backus is not only limited to producing and distributing drinks; It also involves projects that benefit communities and seek to strengthen sustainability. The integration of its infrastructure and environmental commitment mark the way to a management that combines tradition, innovation and social responsibility. While the brand adapts to the challenges of the 21st century, its history remains an example of how a company can evolve without losing its essence.
