Let’s provide for the smooth! The beer that conquers Santa Fe

by David Martín Rius

A sip of beer history

Entering the heart of Santa Fe, we find the famous ‘smooth’, a beer measure that, with its capacity of between 250 and 255 cc, has conquered the palate of many. Born in the vibrant 30s, this brewer ritual is enjoyed in a Stange glass – a visual delight both as gustative – ideal for Pilsen -style beers.

The smooth: a cultural treasure

Officially recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Santa Fe since 2014, smooth is not only a way of drinking, but an emblem of local identity. It was thanks to the persuasive councilor Adriana ‘Chuchi’ Molina that this tradition was formally inscribed, aligning with international standards established by UNESCO.

A new law for smooth

Recently, in 2023, the legislators of the province have initiated a project that seeks to raise the figure of the smooth to provincial cultural heritage. The passion for this drink goes beyond mere like, it is a legacy that you want to preserve.

Smooth party: beer celebration

Since 2019, every second Friday of December, Liso lovers celebrate their day. Under the organization of Gabriel Andruszczyszyn, the holiday extends to various bars and local restaurants where tradition remains alive. One of the most anticipated moments is the revelation of commemorative plaques, which pay tribute to this legacy, prepared by the renowned Oscar “Peco” artist Pecorari.

Plates that hold memories

To date, different local institutions such as the Sarmiento Club and the Don Marcos bar have received its plaque, a symbol that will help remember the value of the smooth in the Santa Fe culture.

Otto Schneider: The visionary behind the smooth

The name of Otto Schneider resonates in the history of smooth. This beer teacher who arrived in Santa Fe in 1911, was a pioneer in the production of beer and flag bearer of the use of smooth vessel. His vision was clear: enjoying beer in its purest form, without decorations that distract flavor.

Traditions that enrich

Schneider was inspired by German customs and his love for beer to implement this style. His legacy has given life to a phenomenon that has evolved since his arrival at the end of the 19th century, when the city began to receive beers from various regions, to the brewer advances that emerged in the twentieth century.

Santa Fe: Capital de la Cervecera

The effervescence of the beer industry in Santa Fe began to take shape at the beginning of the 20th century. With the foundation of the Santa Fe beer and ice factory and other beer workshops, the city began to become a reference in beer production. The rise of bars that offered beer lying marked a decisive moment in the beer culture of the region.

The way to popularity

The 30s brought with it the consolidation of smooth as a preferred way to enjoy beer, opening the doors to beer gardens and courtyards managed by German communities and other local groups. This modality not only refreshes, but unites the community in a toast that endures over time.

A legacy that will never be forgotten

And so, the smooth remains a symbol of pride in Santa Fe, joining generations and celebrating the beer culture. More than a simple glass of beer, it represents a tradition that is still alive, inviting us to share a moment, a toast, and a story to tell each sip.
