A foamy trip through beer history

Beer: historical and modern elixir

Today we will embark on a fascinating journey through the renowned brewing schools in Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, as well as for the innovative traditions of the US brewery. Prepare to discover not only factories with centenary stories, but also the roots of what we understand today as modern beer.

The beer monument: Weihenstephan

We start our tour in Germany, where the beer mastery merges with a rich tradition. Weihenstephan, located in Freising, near Munich, not only stands as a continuity symbol, but also shines for its modernity. Founded in 1040, this brewery is the oldest in the world, with roots that sink into the creation of a Benedictine monastery more than a thousand years ago.

The story that foam

From a hops garden in 768 to the ‘Law of Purity’ promulgated in 1516, Weihenstephan’s story is a perseverance story. Countless fires and wars failed to turn off the fervor of their beer monks, who rebuilt their legacy on multiple occasions, leaving a clear message: beer is an art that must be protected.

Anchor Brewing: San Francisco’s rebel brewery

We cross the Atlantic to enter the vibrant world of Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco. This iconic brewery is defined as the mother of American artisanal breweries. His story began in 1849 when Gottlieb Brekle ventured from Germany to the old land of opportunities. From the humble beginnings to the Renaissance during the ban, each chapter of its history is worthy of a documentary.

Beer resilience

In spite of a devastating fire and the typical ups and downs of the business, creativity and commitment made the reborn brewery of its ashes. Fritz Maytag, a young businessman who saw Anchor’s potential, took the reins and, since then, the brewery has been a lighthouse in the artisanal revolution.

Cantillon: family tradition in each sip

In the heart of Brussels is the Brasserie Cantillon, a true temple dedicated to Lambic beer. Founded in 1900 by Paul Cantillon, this brewery remains in the hands of the family, maintaining its independence against large corporations. Since its opening to the public in 1978, it has become not only a place of production, but a living museum of beer culture.

Preserving tradition

Cantillon is proud of his focus on organic ingredients and his commitment to traditional methods that have defined his beer art for more than a century. Each bottle reflects the Bruslense inheritance, becoming a symbol of quality and authenticity.

Pilsner Urquell: The beer standard

The Czech beer icon could not be missing in our tour: Pilsner Urquell. Since its birth in 1842, this beer has marked the pattern in the world of ‘Pilsner’, revolutionizing the way in which beer occurs and consumes. Its origin is linked to a group of Pilsen visionary brewers who changed the history of golden concoction forever.

A liquid revolution

That famous first pint of Pilsner, characterized by its light color and distinctive flavor, was not only a novelty for its time, but also laid the bases of beer styles worldwide. Without a doubt, a visit to its plant is a trip to the root of modern beer.

Shepherd Neame: History in each barrel

Finally, we cross the British Isles to explore the Shepherd Neame Brewery, the oldest brewer in the United Kingdom. With a legacy dating from 1698, this company has been able to adapt to times maintaining its family essence and traditional production. Its history is marked by innovations and unwavering commitment to quality.

Handling the inheritance

As the fifth generation of the Neame family takes the reins, the brewery remains a reference for beer lovers, supporting tradition while exploring new flavors and options. As the typical Ale of Kent, every beer they produce is a testament of the rich story they represent.

A toast to history

As we close this route through beer history, we remember that each Sorbo tells a story. From the old abbeys to the modern factories, each brewery not only produces drink, but also preserve traditions, cultures and passions that continue to inspire generations. The next time they will raise a drink, remember that they are holding a piece of history.
