by David Martín Rius

Giving oxygen to your beer creation

Today we enter a gadget that can make your beers, wines and other fermented delicacies take all applause in the next family reunion. We talk about the Anvil Oxygenation Kit, a toy that carries your elaboration process to another level without making your wallet tremble of fear.

Why do you need air in your beer!

Aeration is a step that you should not ignore. When you heat your must, oxygen disappears as well as the last piece of pizza at a party. But your yeasts, those small fermentation warriors, require oxygen during their initial reproduction phase. If you want a must at your best moment, you should aspire to a minimum of 8-12 parts per million (ppm) of oxygen. This not only hurries the process, but also gives a push to your yeast cells, helping them survive and prosper.

Knowing Anvil: Your new best friend

For years, I resisted investing in an air system because of high costs. But the arrival of the aeration wands has completely changed the game. These elegant stainless steel wands with super fine diffusers immerse themselves in your fermenter just before adding the yeast, reaching those desired 9-12 ppm in the blink of an eye. It’s like magic, but better, because it’s science!

Attention to details

You can choose to use a common regulator for large oxygen tanks or choose the compact option used by welding kits. For about 10 dollars in a hardware store, you get disposable cylinders. But eye: they are not technically food degree oxygen. Consider adding a small filter to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Widening like a pro

To air, simply connect the oxygen tank to your regulator. Adjust the valve slowly until you see the must of the must. A controlled flow is crucial to maximize oxygenation and avoid bubble explosions.

How long is enough

Generally, 60 to 90 seconds are enough for most beers. However, if you are creating a high seriousness masterpiece, you might need to extend that time! As an additional tip, some experts suggest a second dose of oxygen within the first 12 hours for those very dense musts.

And what about the online Aeradores?

There are online airlines that are inserted into must transfer lines, but they can be more cumbersome if you do not have a flow meter. For the average home brewer, the air wand is a less complicated and very effective path.

In summary: to ferment with joy!

The experience of using the anvil Oxygenation Kit has transformed the way Fermento. From beers to cider, I have seen amazing results. So, if you are looking to improve your fermentations, consider this tool. With less than two minutes you can give an energy impulse to your flavors. So, to uncover some birras with confidence and enjoy the ferment process!
