What really is in the beer myths? Find out here

by David Martín Rius

Beer, that partner of so many moments and celebrations, occupies a privileged place in global culture. However, in the midst of their popularity, a lot of beliefs have sneaked into, rather than help, they confuse. Today, we intend to clear the most common doubts and offer you a clearer vision about this ancient drink with a touch of humor and science.

The ideal temperature? What science says

One of the greatest mistakes is to think that the colder the beer is, the better. Advertising has bombarded us with that idea, but the reality is different. The key is that aromas and flavors are perceived with intensity, and that happens at moderate temperatures, between 5 and 10 ° C depending on the style. In the bars, most dispense the tap beer at about 3-5 ° C, so you just need to hold your glass for a few minutes and the temperature will be perfect to enjoy their nuances. It’s not just about cooling, but really taste.

VS bottles. cans: Who carries the lead?

When choosing, many prefer the bottles, but they are not always the best option to conserve freshness. The main problem is that the transparent glass allows light and oxygen, silent enemies of flavor, penetrate in beer. Light can cause unpleasant aromas, and oxygen, oxidation that ends in a cardboard flavor. The best option: cans, hermetically sealed with aluminum that blocks the light and minimizes oxygen entry. And what to do if you don’t like drinking in can? Simple, pour that beer in a beautiful glass and enjoy its fullness.

Barrel or bottle? The battle for freshness

The aroma and taste of a good beer in barrel sounds irresistible, but the reality is that much depends on maintenance. A well careful barrel can offer an unparalleled experience, but if the lines are dirty or incorrectly disinfected, you could be drinking a ‘mixture’ of not so friendly bacteria. These microorganisms, such as lactobacillus or pediococcus, can transform your beer into a kind of sour milk with a vinegar smell. The recommendation: if distrusting the establishment, opts for a bottled or canned option and avoids unwanted sips.

Are the Ale darker? The confusion of colors

Many believe that the darker, stronger and more robust, but nothing is further from reality. The key is not in the yeast, but in the malt used. The Ales, which work at warmer temperatures, develop fruit and complex flavors, but the dark malt, regardless of the type of fermentation, gives that deep color. So a lager like Dunkel can be as dark and tasty as a Stout, only with different profiles, and without worrying about the intensity of alcohol for color.

The alcoholic content: darker, stronger?

Not always. Guinness, that dark reference, only has 4.2% ABV, well below many light and light beers. Color is not an indicator of alcoholic force, but of the malt used. So a black beer may have less alcohol than a blonde and still offer a more concentrated experience.

Wine or beer? The healthy battle

The debate about what is healthier is usually focused on the resveratrol of wine, but science reveals that beer also has its own antioxidant benefits and, in some cases, they even exceed wine. Both contain compounds that can favor health if consumed in moderation, and in reality, their potential for benefits resides more in balance and avoiding excesses than in the isolated properties of each.

Myths about weight and beer

No automatic ‘beer belly’. Although it is true that beer has calories, it is not a guilty exclusive to weight gain. Everything lies in quantity and how it integrates into the diet. Recent studies show that people who consume in moderation are not necessarily more fat and, in some cases, they even maintain a more stable weight. The key idea: excess and lack of control, not beer itself.

How should beer be stored to preserve its essence?

The main enemy is oxidation, which attacks the flavors of hops and freshness. Ideally, keep cold beer, between 4 and 8 ° C, instead of leaving it at room temperature or warm. The temperature influence the conservation of aroma and taste, and although many distributors store at a moderate temperature for economic reasons, you, at home, you can take care of these details to enjoy each bottle even more.
