Lata or bottle? The epic battle in the beer world

by David Martín Rius

A brief tour of history and impact on beer culture

From the dawn of artisanal beer, the choice between can and bottle has been more than a simple aesthetic or practice preference; It is a kind of generational debate that reflects changes in technology, environmental awareness and consumption trends. It all started in 2002, when a small beer of Colorado broke with stereotypes and presented Dale’s Pale Ale on a can, challenging the old belief that the can was only for industrial beers and that the bottles were synonyms of quality. The discussion, far from going out, has been enriching with each advance and choice of the consumer.

The art of conserving freshness: light, oxygen and temperature

Ensure that a beer maintains its character and aroma goes through taking care of three great enemies: light, oxygen and temperature changes. Transparent or light colored bottles let too much ultraviolet light pass, which accelerates the degradation of the aromatic compounds of the hops and can lead to unpleasant flavors. Only amber bottles offer some protection – even 85% against UV rays – but cans, completely opaque thanks to their material, carry the indisputable advantage in this aspect. In addition, the bottles leave a small air space on their neck that can cause oxidation, while the cans are tightly sealed, protecting the beer from that risk.

The impact of heat and perception of metallic flavor

Another variable to consider is how the drink responds to temperature changes. A can can heat and cool faster than a bottle, which could affect its flavor and freshness if it is not managed well. However, in terms of distrust of metal flavor, advances in internal coatings have eliminated that concern. Currently, cans have a polymer protective layer that avoids any unwanted interaction between liquid and aluminum.

Transport and distribute: Who takes the crown?

When moving liters and liters of beer, the weight and the occupied space make the difference. A 330 ml can is significantly lighter than a bottle of the same volume, which translates into savings in transport costs and greater space savings, allowing the same truck to load more units without sacrificing efficiency. The difference is not only practical: the small and compact volume also facilitates packaging and reduces logistics expenses, giving additional points to cans in this mobility battle.

The ecological footprint: all on the tightrope of recycling

The environmental impact of each container varies according to its weight and production process. The can, being lighter and more compact, requires less resources for transport, reducing the carbon footprint. Both materials, aluminum and glass are technically recyclable indefinitely, but the process to obtain them and produce new containers is not the same. The manufacture of glass, from sand and gravel, is less aggressive for the environment than the extraction and refined bauxite for aluminum. However, the reality is that neither all aluminum nor all glass are necessarily recycled, which opens the door to a series of considerations on sustainability and responsible consumption.

Storage and styles: Traditional favorites or modern trends?

The cans are usually associated with modern styles and beers that are enjoyed in a short period of time, especially those loaded with hops or with light profiles. However, many classic styles, such as Belgian or guardian beers, prefer glass magic. The main reason: the capacity of the glass to preserve the aging and facilitate long -term storage. Although there are currently not enough investigations to determine how cans behave in prolonged guard processes, their use continues to grow in the segment of immediate consumption beers and innovative styles.

What is the best option? A look beyond fashions

At the moment, it seems that the cans offer clear advantages for the modern consumer and the artisanal beer market. Their practicality, less environmental impact and greater protection against light and oxygen make them a preferred option for light and aromatic styles. In addition, its storage and transport efficiency can translate into lower costs, benefits that end up impacting the final price for those who enjoy beer. On the other hand, the bottles maintain a romantic aura and a tradition that, for now, is still difficult to replace in certain styles and in the perception of quality and ritual that many consumers value deeply.

At the end of the day, the choice between can and bottle not only responds to practical issues, but also to personal preferences and market trends that continue to evolve. Science, on the other hand, continues to advance in the search for more sustainable, safe and efficient containers, leaving the door open to a future where perhaps the lines between one and the other become even more diffuse … or simply complement each other to offer the best to each type of beer and consumer.
