by David Martín Rius

Transforming distillation: a new educational dawn

The exciting world of distillation has just received a significant push thanks to the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD). This organization, known for being a kind of ‘Hogwarts’ school for brewers and distiller, has presented its most recent innovation: the general distillation certificate, now available in Spanish! An online course that promises to bring your skills to the next level.

Take out your internal cellar! A course that updates your knowledge

The general certificate in distillation, designed for those emerging stars that are already working in the field, offers between 60 and 80 hours of self -directed content. It is not a walk in the park, but an intensive one that provides the necessary bases for distillmen to go from being apprentices for distillation teachers. And best of all: all the material is in Spanish! So, goodbye to confusing translations and hello to clarity.

What is in the course menu?

From understanding raw materials to navigating the ins and outs of production in a distillery, this course covers all essential aspects. Students can end with a solid base in science and distillation technology, in addition to knowing the best practices in the sector. And for those who love the risk: there is a multiple selection exam at the end to realize what they have learned.

An exam that is like a super bowl of distillation

This exam, which is held in March and October every year, has become an emblematic event in the calendar of many distillians. Thousands of professionals prepare to demonstrate that they can shine in the world of distillation. Since the IBD implemented supervised online exams in 2020, access to certification has become easier, allowing more people to receive this valued credential.

Tom Shelston, the executive director of the IBD, expressed his enthusiasm to take this step towards the Spanish -speaking community, ensuring that the formation can open a thousand doors (and who does not want that!). From the choice of raw materials to quality control and maturation, this course becomes an essential for any distiller.

The way IBD is transforming lives

Experts and enthusiasts in the world of distillation have applauded this new effort. Ricardo Solís, an Ibd Learning Partner for Latin America, knows the impact of this institution very well. “I joined the IBD because I have seen firsthand how people can help take their work to new heights,” he says with a smile. The objective is clear: Empower Spanish -speaking distiller with quality training.

A trip of more than a century

Founded initially in London as The Laboratory Club in 1886, the IBD has traveled a long way. With more than 3,000 global members and a training history that covers more than 100,000 professionals in 90 countries, has made technical education its mission. Each certification they grant has a significant weight in the sector, and the new course in Spanish further reinforces its commitment to excellence.
