by David Martín Rius

Of yesteryear: a foam flash

Did you know that the city of Pilsen, known for its delicious beer, was founded in 1295 by King Venceslao II? As if it were a birthday gift, its inhabitants were given the right to manufacture beers at home. Yes, so if you ever thought about opening a brewery in your home, the Czechs were already one step forward, more than 700 years ago!

THE BIRTH OF THE PILSNER LEGEND

In 1838, the city square witnessed an unusual event: thirty -six barrels of beer were thrown into the streets! The reason was simple: the quality of the local beer had fallen into minced, and the locals had to face the fierce competition of the Bavarian breweries. But, like the Phoenix, the Pilsen bourgeois decided to join a brewery that would mark the story: the bourgeois brewery.

The magical touch of Josef Groll

They invited the German brewer Josef Grol to put their magic into action. With different ingredients and local spring water, Groll created a golden lager with a foam as soft as a cloud, and the taste that would fall in love with generations! According to a local chronicler, when the first drinkers tested this new beer, they were filled with astonishment and delight when discovering a world of unknown flavors.

A city of beer and culture

Pilsen is not only the home of the famous Pilsner Urquell, it is also full of breweries and taverns where to enjoy artisanal beers and different local varieties. Do you want to see the story in action? Walk through its streets and admire the beautiful Renaissance -style buildings that previously housed homemade breweries.

After the traces of the past

Forget about boring tourist guides. In Pilsen, you can follow the traces of the past, from the emblematic market place to the church of San Bartolomeo, where a mixture of modern and ancient art will invite you to reflect on the rich plot of Czech history.

Pilsen: Renacer with flavor

From 1618, the city saw how its light went out, becoming a provincial city for many years. But like the hops that gives life to beer, its rebirth in the nineteenth century brought with it an explosion of both industrial and artistic innovation. Together with illustrious architects, this city saw a new cultural pulse arise, with theaters and galleries that flourished.

The echo of history

Amid the turbulence of World War II, Pilsen suffered a devastating loss of its population. However, when American soldiers arrived in 1945, the town received them with cheers, delighted by the good beer they offered. Since then, the city has been revitalized, rebuilding its old town and becoming an outstanding destination again.

Today and tomorrow: a sparkling trip

Today, Pilsen not only attracts beer lovers, but also those fascinated by their rich cultural tradition. With numerous festivals and events that celebrate their beer legacy, the city is a place where history and the present are intertwined, providing a unique and bubbly experience for any visitor.

So the next time you enjoy a very cold beer, remember that each sip can take you to a tour of the story of Pilsen, where the adventure of beer never ends. Health!
