An ancient story, but not forgotten
A couple of years ago, I shared in these pages my fervent desire to see Lager beer. It didn’t seem like a cry in the desert, because my whispers were rather an echo in the middle of an IPA beers that dominated the stage. Not forgetting that time where any form of barley seemed to pay tribute to hops and its tropical fruits.
The lager, a love over low heat
Little by little, those desires have begun to come alive. Although I have not found my dear maibocks or the intriguing Dunkels on this path, a new star has begun to shine: the Pilsner. This style, familiar and accessible, arises as a promise in the hand of brewers who seek to break the established. There is something almost poetic in its simplicity.
The brewing cycle: fashion in fashion
The elaboration of beer, like fashion, is subject to cycles. We have gone through periods of shy amber, hops explosions, soured beers with personality, and the recent phenomenon of juicy but little bitter IPAS. Now, it seems that the clock has set the time of the lagers.
The reinvention of a classic
Although the Lagers were dismissed in their day, a kind of revolution has begun to come alive. Those breweries who previously clung to the funky and the strange thing, are now tilting their barrels towards some clean and refreshing pilsners. What used to consider a rarity, now is the new objective.
Pilsners: The entrance door
Certainly, some adventures in the world of Pilsners have left much to be desired. However, creativity has not stopped. Although some brewers experience with hops varieties that could not be the most traditional, that has not prevented the spirit of the Pilsner from persisting. Some call it India Pale Lager; Others, simply Hoppy Lager. Whatever, remind us that the essence of the Pilsner is still alive.
A brilliant future for the lager
The Lagers Renaissance is undeniable, and I can’t help imagining a future where styles such as Bock, Doppelbock and Helles take the prominence they deserve. The brewers have a world of malts at their disposal and would be a delight to see how they explore the richness of these ingredients, creating new and exciting recipes that challenge the status quo.
Satisfying all palates
However, in this diverse beer universe, there is always room for each preference. After all, the delight of a beer must be as varied as the range of occasions when we decided to enjoy it. Meanwhile, in the balance of beer, it is time for the Lager to recover its place at the table, next to the exciting and sometimes controversial beers of current trend.
So, let’s raise our glasses through the lagers. We may still have to deal with a couple of IPAS bubbles, but let’s never forget that Lager beer deserves its moment of glory. Health for that!
