Let’s provide for the Stout! Let’s celebrate the international day in style

by David Martín Rius

A history brush: Where does the Stout come from?

The history of Stout beers is like an epic story that goes back to almost three centuries in time. This surprisingly complex style comes from the venerated Porter, which was once the favorite drink of the humble London porters in the 18th century. Imagine these subtitled heroes of the city, loading beers in their sacks while the industrial revolution began to sound.

Stout’s dad: Ralph Harwood

It all started with a brave brewer named Ralph Harwood, who in his experiments decided to mix three types of beer: Brown Ale, Pale Ale and the famous “Stale”. Since then, the word Stout took an unexpected turn; In the beginning, he referred to the most robust versions of the Porter, but quickly consolidated as an emblematic style on his own right.

The birth of Stout Day: History of a celebration

The spark that ignited the International Stout Day came from the hand of Erin Peters, affectionately known as The Beer Goddess. In 2011, this beer enthusiast decided to gather bloggers and brewers to inaugurate a special day dedicated to Stout, watching an event that would celebrate the stories behind each sip.

His phrase, ‘just as the vineyards tell stories of their lands, beer tells stories about its creation’, resonates with each stout that is drink today. Although Erin left us in 2022 after a difficult battle, his legacy is still alive and bubbly.

One day to savor: how to join the party?

The great Stout party is scheduled for the first Thursday of November, and in 2024 it will fall on us on November 7. This is the perfect time to gather friends, visitors and a couple of pints of different varieties of Stout, from the sweetest to the most daring.
