From the 18th century to the Cup: the sparkling story of a beer legend

by David Martín Rius

A legacy that ferments over time

The history of one of the most emblematic breweries in Belgium began in 1784, in a small town near Gante, when Jean Baptiste de Bruin decides to give life to an idea that today endures. His humble name, Bruwerij de Peer, would soon become a symbol of tradition and passion for artisanal beer. The family tradition continued with Angelina Petronella Schelfaut, who, after widowing, took the reins to keep alive the spirit of family artisanal production, passing the legacy to her nephew Joef Schelfaut.

Transformations after wars and science in the bottle

After the tumult of World War I, the brewery changed from the hands of Paul Van Steenberge, a scientist with modern vision, whose microbiology experts promoted new techniques and flavors in production. In 1919, they renamed the brewery as BIOS, reflecting an innovation stage. The German invasion in World War II tested its survival, but it was in the fifties when Joef Van Steenberge assumed a fundamental role, adjusting the course towards the creation of high fermentation beers, a style that still characterizes his dearest products.

The search for identity and variety

The scope of the brewery was clearly expanded in 1978 with the acquisition of traditional recipes, especially the mythical Augustijn, an abbey beer that became an icon of the brand. In the following years, innovation continued with the launch of emblematic labels such as Piraat and Gulden Draak, each with their unique history and character. The arrival of the third generation, led by Paul Van Steenberge and then Jef Versle, saw a significant technological modernization, in addition to a renewed feeling of family pride and international vision.

Legends and symbols: the golden dragon and its legacy

The golden dragon figure transcends the brewery, wrapping myths and symbolisms. It is said that it was a gift from the Norwegian king Sigrid Magnusson, in 1111, destined to decorate the iconic Santa Sofia church in Türkiye. Then, in the medieval era, it was recovered by the inhabitants of Ghent after successive battles, becoming a protector of the city for centuries. Although it was carved in 1377 without legs, its presence on the bell tower is seen as a symbol of power and freedom, in addition to a legendary guardian who was once able to spit fire in the celebrations.

From legend to the label: Gulden Draak in brewing history

The name Gulden Draak, which in Dutch means ‘golden dragon’, reflects Ghent’s inheritance and pride. It is a high fermentation beer, of the genus Belgian Strong Ale, with a remarkable alcoholic graduation, of 10.2% ABV. His story began as a special commission for a nearby mayor, but soon conquered international palates after capturing the attention of Italian consumers. The magic of this beer lies in its complexity: its dark copper color, its deep aroma to roasted malts, and its flavor that combines caramel notes, black fruits and an elegant bitterness that extends in each sip.

What makes Gulden Draak special?

Its opaque and bubbly appearance creates a creamy foam that invites you to taste, while its deep and liqueur aroma prepares the palate for an intense experience. In the mouth, his middle to high body feels silky, with a unctuous sensation and a carbonation spark that cleanses taste and enhances his alcoholic profile, leaving a whale and balanced wake of taste.

Who is this beer jewel for?

Ideal for those who enjoy beers with character, demanding palates looking for a drink that transcends the simple refreshing and offers complex notes and a rich story in each sip. It is a perfect choice for pairing with intense cheeses, red meat or sophisticated desserts that need a robust counterpart.
