A history drink
Did you know that Grodziskie (Grow-Jees-K’ya) is the oldest wheat beer in Poland? Often called “Grätzer”, it originated in the charming city of Grodzisk Wielkopolski. His first documented appearances date from the thirteenth century, when talking about land belonging to the Paradyż Cistercian monastery, also known as Paradise. We could say that it has a name that lives at the height of its flavor.
Grodziskie: A success in beer history
The road to the popularity of Grodziskie began in the fourteenth century, although some documents confirm that it already waves in 1303. Originally, it was a homemade beer so dear that it was used as a remedy for stomach problems. Imagine: A medicine that also gives you a good taste!
The foundation of a tradition
By 1601, a brewer guild was established in Grodzisk, joining all the artisans of the city in a beer mission. This beer became highly appreciated for its quality and, due to its high price, attempts for falsification were punished severely. No traps in the brewery!
From fame to fall
The celebrated Grodziskie was not always in the peak he deserved. At the end of the 20th century, and after World War II, production suffered a significant blow for the nationalization of the industry. The last brewery closed in 1993, leading to this style almost to extinction.
A mystical legend
Despite his decline, Grodziskie was never forgotten. It is said that a Benedictine monk of the seventeenth century, Bernardo de Wabrzeźno, prayed so that Grodzisk’s dry wells would fill again. His wishes came true, and miraculous water allowed the resurgence of beer production. Lift the miraculous monk cup!
The rebirth of a star
The Grodziskie Renaissance began in 2010 thanks to the Polish Association of Cerveceros of origin. In 2012, the Grodziskie Redivivus project was published, which documented its elaboration process and popularized this historical flavor. Remember: History is always ready to give us surprises!
A flavor that leaves its mark
The Grodziskie is mostly made with smoked wheat malt in oak wood, which gives it a rich smoked flavor. This type of beer owes its uniqueness to a particular and mineral water that makes it light and refreshing, with a low alcoholic content that makes it the “Polish champagne.” Perfect for any celebration between friends!
Grodziskie today
This iconic brewer has shone again and has earned the hearts of artisanal beer lovers and history fans. Annually, homemade grodziskie beer competitions are celebrated, highlighting the influence of characters such as the American journalist Stan Hioonimus, who helped to be included in the BJCP styles guide as a historical style.
The value of tradition
Grodziskie is not only a tribute to the rich beer tradition of Poland, but also a resilience lesson. Each sip invites to savor centuries of history and culture. So, the next time you raise a glass of this unique beer, remember that you are touching a piece of history with a flavor that does not forget.
