Dopamine and alcohol: A neuronal party that can be expensive!

by David Martín Rius

The Dopaminergic Revolution when opening the bottle

When we open a bottle, we not only fill a glass; We are organizing a party in our neurons. The true star of this event is dopamine, a neurotransmitter that enjoys encouraging basic behaviors such as feeding and socializing. But what happens when you enter alcohol in the equation? This golden liquid not only helps us to relax, but also activates a brain circuit called the reward system.

What is the blood brain barrier?

To understand how alcohol plays at our neuronal party, we must know the blood brain barrier. This safety network protects the brain, letting only the essentials pass and blocking the imposters. When alcohol enters, it becomes the VIP guest that quickly crosses from the blood to the internal brain festival.

Euphoria and disinhibition: the perfect duet

The effects of alcohol during the first round are undeniable: more laughter, more sociability and a sensation of euphoria that makes any trivial conversation feel like a philosophical debate. However, this wave of pleasure is like a double edge; It can lead to little prudent decisions, like that time you thought that dancing at the table was a great idea. Not everyone experiences these effects in the same way, and factors such as genetics and our previous experiences can modify the intensity of the effect.

The dark side of the party

While some immerse themselves in joy and courage, others may discover that their sensitivity to dopamine makes them more vulnerable to falling into the addiction trap. The theory presented by Koob and Le Moal in 2008 points out that we are not all created equal to the temptations of pleasure.

The abyss of the dependency

The fun, however, does not last forever. The neuronal party becomes a real challenge when alcohol consumption becomes chronic. This is where we begin to see the long -term consequences: the reward system, which previously vibrated in tune with dopamine, begins to lose its magic. Over time, the brain adapts to the constant presence of alcohol, asking for more to obtain the same feeling of satisfaction. This phenomenon, known as “Downregulation”, is the precursor of tolerance and, eventually, of dependence.

A baffled body

With the brain asking for more alcohol, the balance of the reward system is destabilized. By exclusively associating alcohol with the reward, the daily activities you enjoyed may seem tasteless and empty compared.

Mental health: the shadow of alcoholism

But there is more in this story than a simple brain party. The interaction between alcohol and dopamine not only opens the door to addiction, it also creates fertile terrain for mental health disorders. Deregulation in the dopaminergic system can contribute to problems such as anxiety and depression. Chronic consumption can lead to cognitive damage that alters essential functions such as memory and decision making.

The way to recovery

Understanding this complex interaction has allowed researchers and clinicians to develop more effective treatments. However, it is not just about medications that directly affect dopamine, also to address the behavioral and psychological factors that accompany addiction. Recovery requires a multifaceted approach that includes behavioral therapy and psychological support.

A call to moderation

In the end, the history of alcohol and dopamine is a lesson on how substances can influence our behavior and mental health. While a drink may seem harmless, it is crucial to remember that momentary pleasure could hide a long -term capital risk. Promoting moderation and educating others about this phenomenon can be our best defense against the adversities that alcohol can bring.
