Sun and protection: The pair that never goes out of style

by David Martín Rius

Why don’t the sun forgive either in the city or in the beach?

It doesn’t matter if your favorite destination is a hammock on the beach or a cafeteria in the urban heart, the sun is there, expectant. Its rays, invisible but dangerous, cross all kinds of scenarios, and you, unintentionally, you can be on your radar without any protection. The reality is that ultraviolet radiation does not discriminate between sunny and cloudy days, or between the seasons of the year.

The role of UV rays in our health: a silent enemy with several faces

Ultraviolet radiation, or UV, is like an unwanted visitor with several personalities: UVA, UVB and UVC. Most of the time, only grapes and UVB are responsible for wreaking havoc on our skin. The grapes, with its ability to penetrate deeply, can damage the structure on which our skin is sustained, accelerating its aging. Instead, the most energetic UVB rays are the culprit of those annoying sunburn.

The direct impacts of the sun: beyond burns

The sun can test the skin in many ways, from something as visible as redness and blisters, to more durable and silent effects. Excessive exposure can cause damage to collagen and elastin fibers, responsible for maintaining young and firm skin. As if it were a clock that does not stop, the passing of the years and the constant exposure usually translate into wrinkles, spots and loss of elasticity, even in those who initially had the skin more resistant.

Stains and melasma? Solar ink on your skin

One of the least obvious but equally important effects is excessive melanin production, that same substance that gives color to your skin. Sun exposure can cause you to get freckles, dark spots or even melasma, those brands that look like unwanted natural tattoos and that often require specialized treatments to erase them, so preventing is the best strategy.

The highest risk: skin cancer and how it feeds

The relationship between sun exposure and skin cancer is not novelty in the medical world. From bascellular carcinoma to melanoma, they all share a common factor: inadequate or excessive sun exposure. The good news is that, if we take preventive measures, we can reduce that probability significantly.

Beyond the weather: what influence have external factors and the environment

Have you ever wondered why in cloudy days you also have to take care of the sun? The answer is that UV rays cross the clouds and reflect on surfaces such as water, sand and snow, amplifying their impact. In addition, climate change and the decrease in the ozone layer make the radiation doses higher in certain places, even in seasons that were traditionally considered less dangerous.

Protect yourself today, think about tomorrow

The sunscreen is not only an accessory for vacations, but a daily ally. Choosing the appropriate factor, regularly re -apply and complement it with other measures such as wearing a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing, can make a difference. The key is to turn that protection into a habit, not only on beach days but on each day, in every corner where the sun decides to shine.

The sun, that giant star that gives us light and life, also reminds us that taking care of ourselves is an investment in our long -term health and well -being.
