Don’t let your beer suffer! The importance of rinsing the glass.

by David Martín Rius

Behind the bar: The mystery of the rinse

When you enter your favorite craft beer bar, you probably don’t think about the dance that BeerTender performs with the glasses. Many observe that before serving, the glass receives a stream of fresh water as if it were a small purification ritual. But what is behind this simple gesture that could change your beer experience?

The first washing: the golden rule

Before they persuade you that the rinse is all you need, you better know that it does not replace the right washing. According to Dan Lamonaca, owner of Beer Karma in New York, this step is essential but not the last. A glass that has not been correctly washed any attempt to enjoy that fresh beer.

Three reasons to rinse with style

If you still wonder why the rinse is crucial, here are three reasons that strictly need your attention:

1. Cruery of the glassware

First, the rinse cools the glass. If you have gone through the dishwasher and have not had time to stand, it will be warmer than the greeting of an old friend. A quick rinse with cold water prevents the temperature of your beer from rising early.

2. Goodbye to residual soap

Second, the rinse water removes any trace of soap that could have forgotten the glassware, making your first sip a little more … less soapy. Imagine that.

3. Perfect foam, here we go

Finally, the rinse improves the texture of your drink. When creating a slippery surface, it minimizes surface tension, which translates into a soft and creamy foam. Who doesn’t want that?

How to know if they served you in an unwinsing glass?

Now, let’s talk about alerts. It is easy to notice if your beer came in a glass that was not properly rinsed. Excessive foam is your first indicative, which could result in the bar throwing a little more beer by serving it. Oh the tragedy!

Also, if you see badly concealed air bubbles on the surface of beer, you could be before a glass with dust or soap residues. Remember, a well -served beer should have an impeccable presentation.

The ritual of rinse at home

Do not think that this practice is only for the Beertenders. You can also optimize your consumption at home. Be it a can, bottle or Growler, rinse is always a good idea. A simple rinse of 3 to 4 seconds under the tap is wonders.

While bars use high pressure rinses to be efficient, you don’t need specialized equipment. Only a clean glass and fresh water, and you will be ready to enjoy your beer as it should.
