A trip over brewer time
The story of Stella Artois is like a good drink: it has its nuances, bubbles and even a little mystery. It all started in 1366 in Leuven, Belgium, where the Den Horn brewery laid the foundations for what would be one of the most iconic brands in the beer world. Imagine the amount of jugs that have risen since then!
The founder’s spark: Sebastián Artois
The true beer fairy tale began in 1717, when Sebastián Artois, after being apprentice and beer teacher, acquired Den Horn. However, fate played a bad pass, and his life went out at 45. But his legacy did not stop there; It is said that his wife took the reins of the brewery and kept the spirit of beer alive.
THE SLOT OF THE NEXT GENERATION
On October 6, 1733, Adrián Artois, son of Sebastian, joined the brewer guild with just 22 years, a true pupil! By 1840, the brewery was producing more than 480 lots of what many considered the best styles in the region: the famous White beer in Leuven and Peeterman’s darkest.
Challenges and reconstructions
Despite its success, World War I hit the brewery, but did not hurt her to death. In 1923, Léon Verhelst, the great beer teacher who directed the factory from 1901 to 1955, decided not to be overcome and built a new Hoorn brewery, honoring his predecessors.
Stella’s brilliant birth
In 1926, the beer we know today as Stella Artois was born, initially a special edition for Christmas festivities. His name “Stella”, which means star in Latin, comes from the star of Bethlehem, thanks to Madam Van Den Schrieck, who had an outstanding recognition in the brewery.
Expansion and records
Over the years, Stella grew in popularity, reaching the heart of the European continent in 1930 and, by 1960, producing a million hectoliters. Imagine the celebration in the breweries!
Beer now in big hands
In 1993, AB Inbev took command and built a completely automated factory in the Leuven, managing to break production marks every year. The elegant bottle of Stella we know today, designed in 1988 by David Taylor, captures the essence of its rich history.
The art behind each sip: the ritual of the 9 steps
And if you thought to serve a stella it was simply ‘open and drink’, think about it again. Since 1958, there is a particular ritual to enjoy it to the fullest, with 9 steps worthy of a beer teacher.
The critical moments
From cooling the bottle perfectly so far to erect the foam, each step has its reason. Each cup becomes a work of art that takes the story of more than 650 years inside, from its glassware to the service ritual.
Reflections and projections towards the future
The story of Stella Artois is a testimony of resilience and creativity. Throughout the centuries, it has transcended generations, adapting to times and tastes, while its legacy lasts. So, if you have a stella in hand, you know that you are not only enjoying a beer, but centuries of tradition. Health!
